Six hundred delegates, speakers and exhibitors attended SARSCENE 2002 from September 11-14 in Halifax.

Jean Murray, Executive Director of the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, welcomes delegates to the opening ceremony at SARSCENE 2002 in Halifax.

The opening ceremony brought together a number of local dignitaries:

  • Keith Crosland, Regional Emergency Measures Organization Coordinator
  • Bob Harvey, Deputy Mayor, Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Major Perry Kurzynski, Officer in Charge, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax
  • The Honourable Tim Olive, Minister Responsible for the Emergency Measures Act and Minister of Natural Resources for Nova Scotia
  • Constable Tim Nicholson, RCMP "H" Division
  • Geoff Regan, Member of Parliament for Halifax West
  • Charlie Strickland, President of the Nova Scotia Ground Search and Rescue Association

Peter Howe

This year is the 20th anniversary of the first rescue employing the Cospas-Sarsat search and rescue satellite system. Peter Howe, NSS Director, Federal Coordination, presented a video on the history of Cospas-Sarsat. A reception to honour the pioneers and innovators of the Canadian component of the system was held in Ottawa on September 5, 2002.
